In the past when a patient required a filling the most often used material would have been Amalgam a grey filling material containing a small amount of mercury.

Although this is a strong filling material advances in dental materials and techniques  now mean that the material we most often use is a Composite White filling material allowing us to restore decayed or broken potions of your teeth in an almost invisible fashion.

New composite materials have contributed greatly to our dental team’s ability to improve smiles and not just with front teeth, the last thing you want people to see when you are laughing is your black fillings!

The procedure when placing a perfect white filling can vary from practice to practice. It takes the dentist about 10-20 minutes longer on average to place a composite filling than a silver amalgam filling.

Placement time depends on the size and location of the cavity-the larger the size, the longer it will take
Within our practice we spend time placing the composite/ white filling material in layers, using a light specialized to harden each layer.

When the process is finished, the dentist will shape the composite to fit the tooth. The final stage is to polish the composite material to give the restored tooth that perfect look.
